Sir, I think you got the hint.

Speaking for myself, why The Clone Wars because of a feeling of The Phantom Menace acting as de facto Admin, otherwise people here are man enough to take it on the chin as dishing it out.

I am still figuring out who was on which side, must admit it was fun watching the exchange otherwise it becomes too boring. Well, missed the fight till next time.

Johnathan

As a long term lurker and occasional poster, what does put me off contributing more here is the constant personal attacks and belittling attitude of two rather prolific contributors, One seems to have multiple names and the other acts like a moderator constantly posting the group rules whilst seemingly being able to break them with impunity.

.
Great articles and info though it’s just that I find it nicer to reed than comment.

Whale Island Zookeeper

You know my position that when you update the site you need to install Disqus which would be free for a site this size,

I don’t like the bullies on the site and I have only stuck up for myself and others.

Some have got to realise their BBC derived view of the world isn’t shared by many. And they need to wind their necks in when talking to others.

My policy this year is not to respond to certain persons here who aren’t as well as informed or as clever as think they are. As I say Disqus would allow me to switch them off myself.

Further I see our resident troll has now stated posting using my name and I think somebody else’s. Again Disqus would get around this problem.

I would invest more time in the site. I have donated in the past. But their is no point in knocking out several paragraphs for some loon to start ranting about me being pro-Putler and other such nonsense.

Your comments here are just so Ironic.

It was you doing all of that hence me giving up bothering to comment.

James

Well you can be a bit “ass eretive” at times, but I for one value you comments and input which seem knowledgable and pertinent, and I also know all about your zoo. In conclusion the site would not be as interesting or informative if you decided to jump ship.

Supportive Bloke

It is very sad really.

We used to have a lot of very high quality discussions on here which did therefore feed into public policy.

Nobody is going to wade through a lot odd posts that are on here and take the few on point posts seriously.

Which is a shame as RN, indeed all of defence, needs all the help that it can get to achieve budgets that are credible to the rapidly escalating threat levels.

Sailorboy

Remember Martlet launched from Ancilia?
That made a few people grumpy 😂

Supportive Bloke

Ancilia is a decoy system?

I wasn’t aware it could hold Martlet?

Are you perhaps thinking of the pannier system slung below the 30mm on T23?

Trouble with that is that you could have the same effect for less cash by swapping the 30mm -> 40mm and have change for plenty of reloads. It is a lot easier to make 40mm rounds than missiles!

The effective range isn’t that much different that it is worth the effort. OK, with 40mm, at range, you need a few rounds to be sure.

Sailorboy

No, when Ancilia was first revealed it was noted that the decoy rounds are very similar in dimensions and shape to the Martlet tube, and are open at the back as if for a missile exhaust. Hence, some of us (myself included) started speculating about whether a “universal defensive system” could be built to accommodate both missiles and decoys.
However, it got shouted down by a few people, notably Gunbuster, who decided that the fire control systems and sensors would make the modifications not worth the effort.

Supportive Bloke

If you wanted to fire Martlet there are better ways to do that rather than making a relatively cheap system very complex and very expensive.

If you have things that go bang you need people qualified to deal with things that go bang etc etc.

I’m not sure that Martlet offers a lot more for ship defence than a 40mm cab.

It would be better to focus on the 40mm solution.

Bill Gates

Yes it is sad. We had lots of quality discussions here whilst naively believing we actually made a difference in MOD policy but in reality and in all honesty, nothing said here in the comments section, is ever going to “Save the Royal Navy” even the site name was changed.
Personally I gave up trying years ago and now I just look in to have a bit of a laugh at all the silliness and seriously deluded members giving it large.

If you want to make a difference then lobby your MP, that’s the only way they get to know how people feel about defence issues, I’ll wager a bet that none of them even know this site even exists.

Whale Island Zookeeper

I have an iced in Turva as my current desktop wallpaper with it being winter, Christmas etc.

It’s a tricky one. Actually I don’t think it has much to do with cables. It is more about drawing the west into denying Russia freedom of navigation so Russia (and by extension) China can justify doing similar themselves elsewhere now and in the future.

The USN and NATO navies down the years have used exercising freedom of navigation down the years as a political tool. Defender did this in June 2021 off Crimea

It would be a shame if UNCLOS collapsed in the new international system.

Sean

Freedom of navigation is the exercising of the principal in maritime law that any ship of any ship is free to navigate international waters: Article 87(1)a of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). So if we stop freedom of navigation exercises then UNCLOS is already meaningless.

HMS Defender was sailing in Ukrainian territorial waters, which is completely different. Ukraine had no issue with this, only their Nazi neighbour objected.

Whale Island Zookeeper.

I’m fully aware of this article and you see Russia obeys the rules on a regular basis. Do you not know about their English Channel transits ?

Whale Island Zookeeper

I didn’t write that. I forgot I am not responding to a number of persons here and edited my comments to a few dots when I realised that I had typed a comment.

That comment isn’t mine. It’s right though. But not me.

Cat

Yes, Russia and China want to create a long term narrative to justify the invasion and/or occupation of Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Norway, Svalbard, South-Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Burma etc

But in the short term Russia wants to isolate the Baltic and create internal division using the ethnic Russian minorities.

These Russo/Chinese Baltic hybrid operations and the Houthi/Iran Red Sea operations are just a taste of what the Axis Powers have planned for the next global conflict.

All lines of communication will be attacked, surface and subsurface, heavy use of auxiliary platforms and drones deployed from them.

Energy as priority target, cables and pipelines subsurface, tankers on surface.

Suez and Panama closed for allied naval movement.

Mass deployment of seamines, again auxiliary platforms in a major role.

First objective is to force Allies using convoys by asymmetrical tactics, second objective is to strike those convoys by massed drone, cruise missile and ballistic missile attacks.

Whale Island Zookeeper

Russia knows the Baltic is a NATO lake. They know they don’t have the assets to do as you say. Russia dominates the world island. If the Baltic and Black Sea is cut off it matters little to them. Western Europe is interested in Russia, but Russia isn’t interested in Western Europe.

Cat

Russians are interested in Northern Europe and Arctic, Western Europe seems interested in postmodern dung and narcicism in general.

Russians want to control the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Finland, Barents Sea, northern coast of the Black Sea and Danube mouth.

Ignore at your peril.

Whale Island Zookeeper.

Russia is the victim here, you need to wipe those eyes and understand how the West has been the cause of so much oppression. .

Cat

Russia definitely needs more western oppression.

CR1

Whale Island Zookeeper

Not me, someone is trolling me, can’t you see ? I’m reporting everything to admin but they are not helping anymore.

D J

FFS close the Baltic down. Norway, Denmark, Sweden & Germany control the only exit. There is only Russia to complain (everyone else is now NATO). Turkey closed off the Black Sea & despite complaints, it’s working. Yes they let civilian traffic through, but cutting undersea cables during peacetime sounds rather like piracy (letting nation states off in the short term). There is I believe international law regarding piracy & the outcome (depending on jurisdiction) can be rather harsh. International law of the sea only applies to nations that accept it & as shown in the SCS, some don’t. The more politicians fudge around the periphery, the higher the costs go. Putin knows he can’t win against NATO & several non NATO states are not to be taken lightly. Why is NATO (or should that be EU?) on the back foot here.

Sean

Just how do you propose shutting down the Baltic ? Do you even know about the Laws governing the Bosphorus ?

Jim

Simple, just pull the plug out !
Russian warships don’t really have anywhere to now and some are effectively stranded off Syria so I guess their options are rather limited. Subs and Civilian ships.

Whale Island Zookeeper

Have you not heard of the Unified Deep Water System of European Russia?

It is the reason why most classes of new Russian surface ships are small.

comment image

Jim

No I’m not but thanks for sharing this I’m no Russian fan personally.
Interesting to see that all routes seem to hit dead ends though either through land locking or area/access denial, what’s the plan for the Syrian ships ?

Whale Island Zookeeper

It’s a transportation system. It is rather like saying rail lines in Scotland go nowhere to say it ends in dead ends.

The Caspian Sea is a route to the Gulf via Iran. The produce of the Donbas doesn’t need to leave via the Black Sea. It means that Russia can place small surface combatants into the Gulf of Finland to defend St Petersburg if needed. It is a useful system for them.

The reason why Karakurts and Buyan-M have deep VLS systems is because the Russians realised that missiles launched from ships were not covered by the INF.

The Syrian ships when they leave will just go through the Med back home. The US can’t say China is wrong in the South China Sea and then deny Russian ships free passage through international waters.

Sean

The Copenhagen Convention of 1857 makes the Denmark Straits open to international shipping.

However the alternative exit from the Baltic to the North Sea, the Kiel Canal, is purely under German control. The question has to be asked why this hasn’t been closed to Russian tankers.

Whale Island Zookeeper.

Not everyone sees Russia as the greater threat. You need to learn to be open minded and use the internet, it’s all there if you can be bothered to look.

Whale Island Zookeeper

Not me.

Whale Island Zookeeper

why is everyone on here picking on me ?

Duker

The perp is impersonating others as well .

Duker

EU waters-except international straits- ARE closed to Russian flagged vessels
Obviously like every other country flags of convenience are used which do head to Russian ports.

Irate Taxpayer (Peter)

Duker

Is this the same situation as the Sea of Osktosk ?

If you post the chart (map) we are all waiting to see: I am sure it will make an intersting discussion point

Peter (Irate Taxpayer)

Duker

I was wrong about the Danish Straits, its classed as international waterways open for all.

Pete

The South China Sea and Strait of Taiwan are also international waterways open to all.

Duker

They are international waterways not straits within the territory of others which are de facto international waterways
Example of Dover Str -Pas de Calais. its 18mi at narrowest so is entirely in territorial waters of two countries. And they regulate the through traffic for safety
Str of Taiwan is 110 miles wide

Wasp snorter

I would just amend the article where it states ‘feet’ instead of ‘fleet’ as in ‘Risks present by the shadow feet’, unless this is about my dancing technique.

Jim

Sorry but I really have to ask about your name. Wasp Snorting seems rather odd. Do you have some sort of death wish ? I once inhaled a Spider whilst asleep, it wasn’t the nicest wake up call but I just can’t imagine snorting a wasp. Is it not painful?

Fat Bloke on Tour

Surely the geography of Denmark allows some pressure to be brought onto the “Shadow” oil tanker fleet — safety / navigation / insurance / maintenance all available to allow some sort of “pull over” by the Coastguard?

Elephant in the room — lack of hulls to do the donkey work.
A lack of hulls that can be effectively crewed on constabulary duties with 50 people.

Desperate people do desperate things.
At the moment we have no defence against a “brass neck / chancer”.
Interesting to see how innovative the anchor draggers are.
Abusing old equipment or using new upgraded stuff?

Supportive Bloke

I’d suspect old kit modified with an angle grinder!

Jim

I hope it’s a battery powered angle grinder.

Irate Taxpayer (Peter)

Jim

Very interesting to see here on Navy Lookout all of the nitty-gritty detail of what was widely reported by the general media last week.-

Especially the good news that the Finns are being far tougher on this ship and its crew than any other NATO ally has been, in other “incidents”, at anytime in the recent past: .

…and thus the Finn’s are now putting them onto the naughty step

= well done to the Finnsh Coastguard!

  • Is the very unusual JEF map orientation supposed to be a “slightly sarcastic commentry” on the fact that the British economy is now on it’s knees?
Whale Island Zookeeper

There are Medieval maps orientated that way. The North Sea is the centre of Northern Europe after all.

Duker

Northern Europe is universally seen to be the Scandinavian part so actually you are wrong. Try a simple Google Map search it’s not difficult.

Its because of the carrier Prince of Wales and CSG visit to South China sea and east asian waters later this year . Its orchestrated.

Red herring

Jim

Yes, Humour tends to fly at greater altitudes, way above most peoples heads.

I tried a really scientific experiment earlier by turning the Laptop 90 degrees to the left, damn near got sea sick.

Christ knows how the Aussies cope.

Jim

By the way, Have you got any of that Fudge going spare, Rum flavoured would be good, I can see this being a long night. Happy to pay.

Irate Taxpayer (Peter)

Jim

No spare fudge

I am now saving it for the next carrier building contract

Remember: it needs to be Rock Hard fudge (so very well seasoned and mature)

Peter (Irate Taxpayer)

PS I don’t think Duker likes my sense of humour. What do you think?……

Jim

Bugger, I was relying on you to provide tonight’s happy hour fuel. I got my best string vest and Y fronts and the Desktop pic is a rather cool Ice Breaker with a rather large beam.

I think Duker likes you as he’s not reported you and had all your post’s/comments removed.

On second thoughts, I have to question why that is ?

Is he one of your employees ?

Is he one of your Fudge Packers ?

Am I Paranoid ?

Will all of these comments be deleted ?

I kindly asked if Admin would consider adding a Blocking feature but it got removed.

Things are easier over on the UKDJ site now that all the Trolls have been removed.

Any luck on the Fudge ?

Who’s Duker anyway ?

Irate Taxpayer (Peter)

Jim

Duker should be very easy to spot

…..because he is clearly two faced…

…..as he is now trolling his own comments (directly above)

Editor – ACTION THIS DAY PLEASE! i.e. troll removal)

Peter (Irate Taxpayer)

PS

Your comment will probably be deleted by the Editor on the grounds of good taste (note 1). The thought of you posting on this site whilst wearing just a string vest must be a clear violation of at least one NL editorial policy

Note 1.

Please ignore yet another uninteded pun about fudge

Jim

You didn’t mention the Y fronts, probably better left off to be honest especially during windy conditions. .
A rather bizarre evening all in all.
I asked for a Blocking feature earlier in the day but my comment was deleted.
I do wish it was an option though, It would certainly stop being trolled on this otherwise brilliant site.

I have to ask just how long are Russian and Chinese ship’s anchor chains ? Something doesn’t add up.

Cat

I dont know but the average depth in Gulf of Finland is 40 meters, max depth is 120 meters.

Leo

Why? What doesn’t add up? Am I missing something?
It happened, the cable was damaged, wasn’t it?

The Grim Whirlwind Reaper

This rather nifty map shows a colour indication bar that seems to have two white sections, I really don’t see it as a trustworthy tool when venturing forth in a state of war.

There is a big Grey area it seems.

Sailorboy

Sorry for being late, I had to stay behind and do lines.

“I must not act my age at school and keep studying knitting and crochet”

Can you believe it ? Just why do I get so much grief. ?

Sailorboy

It’s painfully obvious this is all the same commenter.
There are places like Twitter where this sort of behaviour is encouraged, but this is a respected focus site with a lot of genuinely helpful and knowledgeable people who want to add to technical discussions.
The snarkiness and ill feeling promoted by some on here gets under everyone’s skin and everyone is guilty to a certain extent of encouraging it with snide put-downs and insinuations.
What do you get out of this sort of silliness? Do you feel pride at having shown everyone up from beyond your keyboard, that visitors to the site will marvel at your cleverness? Do you genuinely believe that you are making life better for the other commenters?
Fight a crusade against names on a website all you like, but don’t get in the way of people using the comments for its intended purpose.
Good night all.

Jim

Well said SB. We’d hate the comments section to be changed for the worse due to some silly keyboard warrior who has nothing better to do all day and night.

Duker

They are wolf warriors being directed at a higher level . It’s other aviation sites as well.

Jim

Well I keep trying to work out what that all means but alas I’m no wiser “Wolf Warriors being directed at a higher level” ? nah, not a clue.

“It’s other aviation sites too” ? this is not an aviation site, it’s a navy site, even says so in the title, just sayin like.

Last time I replied to one of your comments you hit me with the words ” Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind” That made no sense either and all I’m seeing now is confused comments about who you actually are.

I see you are not the only one with these issues though. Even so I don’t think I’ll bother replying to you again, whoever you think you are or are not.

Personally I’m here to join in and be civil and courteous to my fellow posters.

Duker

You were offensive to me personally , even though I only disagree with your claims.
Being civil and courteous is a fine thing. Now
Other aviation sites have the wolf warriors, except they take on US.
The reasons for them taking on a RN focused site , is CSG25 to South China sea. My guess you already know all that… Il leave it there

We could always do the sensible thing and lift sanctions on Russian oil and gas. 1 to lower the world price. 2 to stop the West having to buying over priced Russian oil and gas via third parties, and 3 end the stupid war in Ukraine which is making rich people richer and the rest of us, besides poorer, closer to being annihilated by the Western elites stupidity

Can anyone please explain what is going on here ? I see one poster having serious arguments with himself, It’s all very worrying.

So glad the Hokay Kokay performance over the Chagos Archipelago looks like its now over. The base which we last used majorly in 1945 seems safe and it wont be a Chinese take away after all.
I look forward to staying at the Trump Resort Hotel as a soon as it opens. Good fishing and tight lines!

There was no british base at Diego Garcia in 1945. It was coconut plantation.
The UK government deal was contingent on US remaining as the tenant to a different landlord.
UK and US now work with Australia in Indian ocean to have their nuclear subs operate and be maintained at a RAN naval base outside Perth

Duker

What a surprise
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/01/19/russia-baltic-undersea-cables-accidents-sabotage/
Accidents, not Russian sabotage, behind undersea cable damage, officials say

An emerging consensus among U.S. and European security services holds that accidents were the cause of damage to Baltic seabed energy and communications lines.

Russia certainly had motive, but its been found its not deliberate

Instead, U.S. and European officials said that the evidence gathered to date — including intercepted communications and other classified intelligence — points to accidents caused by inexperienced crews serving aboard poorly maintained vessels.

U.S. officials cited “clear explanations” that have come to light in each case indicating a likelihood that the damage was accidental, and a lack of evidence suggesting Russian culpability. Officials with two European intelligence services said that they concurred with U.S. assessments.

This site encourages evidence not rumour and here its is . But of course there still is the risk of ‘nefarious actors’
